Matthew WrightManaging Partner

Matthew W. Wright is the managing partner of Wright Welker & Pauole. He holds a preeminent-AV rating, which is the highest rating in the Martindale-Hubbell national registry of preeminent attorneys. Mr. Wright has been named repeatedly to the list of Southwest Super Lawyers®. In addition to being a seasoned trial lawyer, Mr. Wright’s practice includes extensive appellate court experience with appearances before The United States Supreme Court, The United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, The Arizona Supreme Court, and Arizona appellate courts.

Mr. Wright handles a volume of commercial and insurance defense litigation. Mr. Wright has litigated cases involving catastrophic personal injury, wrongful death, complex products liability, 42 U.S.C. 1983 claims, sports-related litigation, fire loss, maritime actions, bus accidents, toxic torts, and asbestos litigation. Representative clients include The Arizona School Risk Retention Trust, Inc., Arizona State University, Arizona Board of Regents, City of Phoenix, CNA Insurance Companies, Everest Insurance, Farm Bureau Insurance Companies, Liberty Mutual, Munich Re America Corp., and the Oakland A’s.

Mr. Wright’s practice also involves representing school districts in trial, administrative hearings, and on risk management issues. He routinely presents at seminars for school districts concerning risk management issues. Similarly, he advises lobbyists concerning proposed legislation for the benefit of school districts.

Mr. Wright serves as a mediator for the Maricopa County Superior Court as a Judge Pro Tem.

Mr. Wright graduated with honors from New Mexico State University, where he was selected the Outstanding Senior in the College of Arts and Sciences. He played for the New Mexico State football team (WAC Conference) where he received all-conference honors as the Male Scholar Athlete of the Year. Mr. Wright graduated from the Arizona State University, Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law, where he was chosen Outstanding Trial Advocate and a national member of the Order of Barristers. Mr. Wright has taught post-graduate level courses on school law as an adjunct professor for the Northern Arizona University, and has served as an adjunct professor for the trial clinic at the Arizona State University College of Law.

Chris WelkerPartner

Christopher S. Welker graduated summa cum laude from Arizona State University’s College of Law (J.D., 1999), where he served as Associate Managing Editor of the Arizona State Law Journal and as a student instructor in the Legal Research and Writing Program. He received his undergraduate degree from Arizona State University (B.S., cum laude, 1996).

Mr. Welker is admitted to practice before all Arizona state courts, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona. Dave PauolePartner

Dave Pauole is primarily a civil litigator in cases involving catastrophic personal injury, wrongful death, and civil rights. He has also developed a considerable appellate practice, having handled a myriad of direct appeals and special actions for parties as well as nonparties seeking to appear as amicus curiae. He has even had the unique experience of practicing before courts of last resort after successfully petitioning both the Arizona Supreme Court and United States Supreme Court for review.

Mr. Pauole regularly represents and advises Arizona school districts on matters of student rights and discipline, employment, intergovernmental agreements, legislation and policy, legal compliance, risk management, school finance, elections, etc. Mr. Pauole holds a preeminent-AV rating, which is the highest rating in the Martindale-Hubbell national registry of preeminent attorneys.

      Dominic VerstegenPartner

      Mr. Verstegen primarily practices in the areas of commercial litigation, insurance defense, and employment law, representing corporations, municipalities, and individuals in all phases of litigation. He is admitted to practice before all Arizona state courts, the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

      After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Northern Iowa with a major in Communications in 1997, he graduated with distinction from the University of Iowa College of Law in 2000. While in law school, Mr. Verstegen was an Associate Editor on the Journal of Corporation Law, Treasurer of the Student Bar Association, and co-founded the Pro Bono Society.

      In his free time, Mr. Verstegen writes a column for the Arizona Republic / AZCentral.com.

        Scott AndersenSenior Counsel

        Mr. Andersen graduated from Arizona State University with an economics degree in 1997, and received his law degree from California Western School of Law in 1999. He is admitted to practice before all Arizona state courts, the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He primarily practices commercial litigation, construction law, and insurance defense litigation, representing corporations, municipalities, and individuals in all phases of litigation.         As a third-generation Arizona native, Mr. Andersen enjoys practicing in areas that utilize his agricultural roots. He works with farmers, dairies, and broker’s throughout Arizona drafting contracts and works with them to resolve contract disputes.

          Richard CarpenterAssociate

          An Arizona native, Richard Carpenter graduated from Arizona State University in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics. He then attended the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, where he served as an editor of the University of Pittsburgh Law Review. After graduating from Pitt in 2012, he earned a Master of Industrial and Labor Relations degree from Cornell University with a concentration in human resources and organizations.

          Mr. Carpenter is admitted before the Supreme Court of Arizona and the United States District Court for the District of Arizona. His primary areas of practice are commercial litigation, construction litigation, insurance litigation, and personal injury (including asbestos litigation).

          Diane BornscheuerAssociate

          Ms. Bornscheuer was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1985, with a B.S. in Marketing, and with high distinction. Ms. Bornscheuer obtained her J.D. from Duquesne University School of Law in 1995, where she was a member of the law review, and also had an externship with the Hon. Carol Los Mansmann of the Third Circuit Court of Appeals.

          In 1996, Ms. Bornscheuer was admitted to the Arizona Bar, the United States District Court, District of Arizona, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Ms. Bornscheuer has over 19 years of experience in diverse areas of civil litigation.A substantial portion of her practice has been devoted to complex construction-related litigation. Ms. Bornscheuer also has extensive experience in employment discrimination matters, and has advised and defended public entities regarding employment/personnel issues, various types of civil rights issues, and business-related tort and contract claims.

            Linnette-Flanigan-Picture

            Linette FlaniganPartner

            Linnette Flanigan currently leads the Wright Welker & Pauole workers’ compensation
            team. Ms. Flanigan regularly advises employers, insurance carriers, third-party
            administrators and claims adjusters regarding their rights and responsibilities under the
            Arizona Workers’ Compensation Act. Ms. Flanigan actively works with and advises her
            clients on all issues from claim inception through litigation and/or appeal.
            Ms. Flanigan brings with her more than nineteen years of litigation experience in a
            variety of disciplines. Prior to joining Wright Welker & Pauole, Ms. Flanigan led the
            Arizona worker’s compensation team for a national firm. She also was in-house counsel
            for SCF Arizona (now known as Copperpoint Mutual) where she litigated all types of
            worker’s compensation claims, worked with and advised claims adjusters in claims
            handling and best practices and consulted with employers in an effort to reduce risks
            associated with on the job injuries.

            Ms. Flanigan also has experience in tribal law, representing Native American tribes and
            related business entities on issues ranging from governance to tribal liability defense.
            Ms. Flanigan also spent several years litigating high stake complex commercial litigation
            disputes on issues ranging from professional negligence, contractual disputes, real
            estate and lending disputes, and insurance coverage. Ms. Flanigan also spent several
            years as a criminal prosecutor where she prosecuted violent and non-violent felony
            offenders.

            Ms. Flanigan’s current and former clients include school districts, hospitals, security
            agencies, hotels, resorts, restaurants, retail establishments, construction companies,
            commercial food service and processing companies, developers, attorneys, trucking
            companies and car dealerships.

            Ms. Flanigan has handled matters before the Industrial Commission of Arizona, various
            superior courts in the State of Arizona, United States District Court and Arizona
            appellate courts.

            Ms. Flanigan is an Arizona native. She obtained her undergraduate degree in sociology
            from Arizona State University. She also received her JD from Arizona State College of
            Law (now known as Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law). As a law student, Ms.
            Flanigan served as a student writer and managing editor of the Arizona State Law
            Journal.

            Donald B. Petrie, EsqSenior Counsel

            Don graduated from Arizona State College of law in 1991, magna cum laude, and was awarded Order of the Coif. After clerking for two summers, during law school, in Phoenix, Arizona at the law firm of Gallagher & Kennedy, he joined the firm as an associate attorney and became a Shareholder in 1996. Over the next 24+ years, Don practiced law at Gallagher & Kennedy primarily in the areas of product liability defense, bad faith/coverage insurance law, and general commercial litigation. In the product-liability arena, he has represented manufacturers of off-road motorized vehicles, motorcycles, watercraft, construction equipment, building products and other goods and products in a wide variety of product-liability matters. He also gained extensive experience handling complex general commercial and insurance bad faith/coverage litigation. Over the years, Don’s pragmatic and professional style has earned him significant client loyalty and consistently successful results.

            Don has a Preeminent-Peer-Review rating from Martindale-Hubbell and has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America® for Commercial Litigation and Insurance Law during 2013-2015.

            Over the past few years, Don has appeared, written, and spoken on constitutional issues. He is the radio co-host on Liberty Storm with Shane Krauser, a talk show focused on constitutional issues facing the United States. The Liberty Storm program previously has aired on The PATRIOT (960 AM), KFNX—INDEPENDENT TALK (1100 AM).

            Prior to receiving his law degree, Don was a real estate broker in Santa Fe, New Mexico and, before that, a farrier and blacksmith on racetracks (thoroughbred and quarter horse) in the western United States and a rodeo cowboy.
